Reverse Circulation Drilling Rig Working Principle
Unlike conventional positive circulation drilling (drilling medium flows down from the inside of the drill pipe and returns from the annulus carrying cuttings), reverse circulation drilling works oppositely. It mainly relies on high-pressure air (or a small amount of water/mud) as the circulating medium.
In short, high-pressure air is pumped to the drill bit at the bottom of the hole through the outer channel of the double-wall drill pipe. At the bottom of the hole, the air is mixed with the broken cuttings and then sucked to the surface at high speed from the inner channel (center tube) of the double-wall drill pipe. This process is like a powerful “reverse vacuum cleaner”. After the air flow carrying cuttings reaches the ground, it passes through a cyclone separator, where the cuttings are separated by centrifugal force and fall into the sample collection bag, while the air is discharged. This working method ensures the continuous and rapid return of cuttings, avoids the retention or contamination of cuttings in the hole, and thus obtains more accurate samples.
